We have had this engine for about 3 months and have followed the break in procedures. It is on an older Green model 84″ Gee Bee model Y Sportster and our first flight today was great. Engine has run great right out of the box. Plane weight is just over 17 pounds and will well on just over 3/4 throttle. Our only complaint is that there are no instructions for mixture adjustment on the UMX carburetor. We recommend this engine to anyone that is interested in a great 50cc radial.

I bought a 1/5 scale PT 17 Stearman with a UMS 5-55 engine. I had no instruction book on the operation of the engine. I called CH IGNITATIONS and talked with Adriane. He was very helpful and directed me to the UMS web site. Fortunately for me the engine was close enough in tune that it fired right up and ran pretty good. There’s no instructions for the needle settings for the UMS carb. If you are familiar with an OS OR SAITO carbs you can figure it out. The hi and low needles were both very rich. I got the hi speed needle set and finally got the low speed set to where it would idle good. With the amount of black oil coming from the exhaust . It seems to not be broken in. I mixed a 32 to 1 oil for fuel. I’m going to run it as if it has not been broken in properly. I’m running a 21/8 XOAR prop. I haven’t tacked the rpm yet . It seems to have plenty of thrust. The sound is so good. I’m going to taxi it around for the break in period rather than tying it down .
